Upholding an uncompromising vision with clear intention, Great American Ghost know exactly what they want to say about their community, the greater world around them, and humanity as a species. They transmit their message without filter delivered through a combination of basement-born hardcore spirit, staggering metallic precision, polemic lyrical provocations, and unexpectedly arresting melodies. Now, the band have released their fourth full-length offering and SharpTone Records debut, Tragedy Of The Commons. The album offers a powerful statement on exploitation, oppression, and scarcity. On the Will Putney produced record, Great American Ghost transmit their message without filter delivered through a combination of basement-born hardcore spirit, staggering metallic precision, polemic lyrical provocations, and unexpectedly arresting melodies.
Diving into the album’s themes, vocalist Ethan Harrison shares: “We are a political band, and we always have been. We integrate ‘extreme views’ into what we do, which is ‘extreme music’. Rather than write another generally political album, we tried to play into broader themes of hopelessness. Normal people are losing control on a constant basis. Tragedy Of The Commons is a statement about exploitation. If two people share finite resources, one person will eventually exploit those resources and hurt the other person. Citizens don’t have enough money to eat and live in this country, but our government is spending billions on funding other armies around the world that are being used to kill other poor people. Tragedy Of The Commons boils down to this fundamental exploitation of the less fortunate.”
Leading up to the album, Great American Ghost released four striking visuals for singles Kerosene,Lost In The Outline, Forsaken, and Hymn of Decay. The mostly melodic focus track Writhe was a definitive moment in the writing process for the band, as Harrison shares, “Writhe was the moment I realized what this record was going to be for us. It was the truest collaboration of the members of this band, old and new, up to that moment and I remember feeling reinvigorated with Great American Ghost as a whole. It happened so naturally that I remember thinking ‘this record IS going to be different'.’”
The eleven tracks on Tragedy Of The Commons are earth shattering, lifting the band’s metalcore roots through industrial noise and chaotic riffs. The vocals are outright heavy, with moments of infectious cleans that make for cathartic sing-a-longs.
“I’d love for you to walk away from this record and say, ‘That was not what I expected’,” shares Harrison.“This record is a realization of a lot of things. We’ve realized what we are, who we are, and what we sound like. This is Great American Ghost.”
Great American Ghost will tour Europe and the UK this September and October supporting Bleed From Within.
