Australian punk freaks Private Function are set to unleash their fourth album, titled ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ on May 23rd 2025. Known for their raucous live shows and sharp wit, Private Function continues to push boundaries and challenge conventionality. The first track from the 19-track LP, lead single ‘Koala’, is out today.
Following on from the success of their 2023 ARIA-nominated album 370HSSV 0773H ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ showcases Private Function’s signature blend of catchy hooks, irreverent lyrics, and a family-friendly “go fk yourself" attitude that has garnered them an international cult following.
The first single, 'Koala’ walks the line of being a departure from Private Function's signature sound whilst at the same time being the most “PF” song Private Function has ever written. “It’s a song about hugging the ones you love and holding them as tight as you can for as long as life lets you.” says vocalist Chris Penney.
In true PF fashion, the album’s artwork is as inventive as the music itself: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ features the world’s first microscopic album cover composed of 2590 individual record covers designed by Bootleg Comics. Each physical copy includes a custom-built magnifying glass, letting fans dive deep into the artwork, one teeny-tiny cover at a time.
Recorded at York Street Recorders with visionary producer Stefan Blair, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ captures the raw chaos of PF’s live show. Blending bratty humour and punk-rock irreverence, Private Function are as provocative as they are innovative, constantly pushing and poking holes in genre.
Across 19 tracks, they deliver a wild ride through a genre-jumping headache that includes sea shanties, folk songs & a six-minute electronic tour de force. Each song is infused with the trademark tongue-in-(butt)-cheek ethos. The album is a celebration of the harsh and never-ending absurdity of modern life, from the blistering magnum opus of ‘Sucked In F**khead’ to the anthemic modern classic ‘Sh*t’.
Over the past eight years, Private Function have built a reputation as one of Australia’s most explosive and unpredictable live acts, headlining venues like the Forum Theatre and Sidney Myer Music Bowl, delivering an iconic Meredith set and opening for Green Day, The Bronx, The Spits, Grinspoon, and Spiderbait. They are undoubtedly the only band to claim a run of top ten records, international tours, and an ARIA nomination at the same time as having their album banned in South Australia and receiving cease and desist letters from multiple theme parks.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ will be available for pre-order on April 23rd from www.privatefunction.store and can be streamed on all major platforms from May 23rd.
