‘Oh! The Ocean’ Album Review
Oh! The Ocean - The Wombats
Oh! The Ocean is the perfect soundtrack to summer drives with the windows down, and for sweaty and sand-crusted beach days with an ice-cream in hand. The Wombats’ sixth studio album is a callback to the roots of their original sound: Brit-indie-rock full of guaranteed ear-worms like Blood on the Hospital Floor, Kate Moss, and more—while also tackling life’s plaguing questions head-on with abashed, brutal honesty, and an added maturity shaped by frontman Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy’s experiences as a new father. On the album’s introspective and existentialist quality, he says:
“The album offers up some internal questions like: why are my head and body disconnected all the time? Why am I incapable at times of seeing any form of beauty in the world or in others? Why do I expect the world to conform to my will? Why do I never stop and smell the flowers?”
Even after over 20 years as a band, The Wombats remain fresh and bold, with plenty to love for new and existing fans.
