Tasman Keith Returns Withs New Single “Territorial”.
Today, Tasman Keith releases his new single, ‘TERRITORIAL’, a powerful tribute to the community that shaped him. With production by Beddy White and Papertoy, the track reflects the confident, braggadocious spirit of his roots, drawing heavily on the experiences that have influenced both his life and his music. In celebration of the release, Tasman will set out on a single tour, with shows in Sydney, Coffs Harbour, and Melbourne.
Following his debut LP, A Colour Undone, in 2022 and a series of high-profile features in 2023, ‘TERRITORIAL’ marks Tasman’s return to the forefront of Australian hip-hop. “The song came to me during a turbulent period in my life, where returning to straight rapping felt necessary and therapeutic,” says Tasman. His evocative and sharp-witted lyrics vividly portray life in regional Australia, inviting listeners into his deep connection to the place. He adds, “To begin this new chapter, I felt it was important to return to the mission and my community before propelling forward.”
Family and legacy are central themes in ‘TERRITORIAL’. The track opens with a vocal sample from Tasman’s cousin, Paul Knox, anchoring the song in his familial roots. The accompanying music video features several of Tasman’s relatives, including poignant scenes with his father, Wire MC, underscoring Tasman’s role in continuing his family’s artistic legacy.
Speaking about the music video, Tasman explains, “The video shows regional Australia as I see it, having grown up there. I wanted to make the imagery clear for people who may not experience it and show my people in real time,” he says. The track and visuals offer a candid snapshot of the lives and landscapes that have influenced him, capturing moments of everyday life in Bowraville, where he grew up, with nods to communities like Yarrabah and Kempsey, places that have played a key role in his artistic journey.
Visually, the music video pays homage to the influence of country music in the communities that hold particular significance for Tasman, highlighted by fashion elements inspired by Aboriginal Stockmen. “I wanted to shine a light on the history of Aboriginal Stockmen and their connection to the land through their work, which mirrors how I connect to the country through my music,” Tasman explains. He continues, “In my community, we grew up around a lot of country music—Charley Pride, Roger Knox, and Randy Travis—and that influence can be seen throughout the music video."
TERRITORIAL is more than just a song; it is a testament to the power of community, family, resilience and legacy. With it, Tasman Keith continues to carve out an eminent space in Australian music, bringing the voices of his people into sharper focus.
